How Much Should my Kitchen Remodel Cost?
We get asked this question frequently as we meet with potential clients. The short answer is always, “It all depends…” Which is never the answer the client is seeking. When we break down a “kitchen remodel” project with a client, we soon discover the many different aspects and variables that play into the question, ‘How much should it cost’.
At the very basic and simple end of the spectrum on this question is a project type we call a ‘Pull and Replace’ project. This project type simply consists of removing the existing and out-of-date cabinets and counters, replacing them with new cabinets and new counters. Nothing else, just preserving the same kitchen layout, same appliances, etc. We simply remove the old and install the new cabinets and counters.
Obviously, this approach to freshen up your space is very effective and the most pocketbook friendly. A project like this can range from $20,000 to $30,000 or more, depending upon materials selections and size of the space. Within this lowest price point framework we can provide very basic cabinets, with limited colors available and limited door style selections.
These lower price point cabinets are still very functional and beautiful, and no doubt will be an upgrade to any existing cabinet out there older than 10 years old. A lower price point option for counters would be to select a plastic laminate (Sometimes referred to as Formica) counter in lieu of a granite or quartz product. These considerations will yield a beautiful upgrade to your existing space in the most pocketbook friendly approach.
Naturally, we can also provide a very custom cabinet option with almost unlimited options and colors, together with the most current and trendy styles and designs in a level 9 quartz counter. Still within the ‘Pull and Replace’ project type, these elevated custom upgrades can range as high as $50,000, again depending on material selections and size of space.
Another project type we do most frequently is referred to as a “Full Kitchen Remodel”. This project type most often includes a kitchen layout change, opening up the space by moving interior walls to be more in line with the now popular “Open Concept” look and feel of the room. Projects of this magnitude most often include new flooring, new cabinets and counters, new appliances, new window and wall treatments, electrical and plumbing upgrades, etc. The size and scope of these types of projects vary widely and can range anywhere from $40,000 to $175,000. The money spent on these project types is also conditioned upon material selections and sheer scope of the work.
So when asked the question, “How much should my kitchen remodel cost?” one can easily see the first response given of, “it all depends…” is actually not intended to mislead or distract the potential client but rather to be open and honest about the fact that stating a price without investigating the project type, some idea of scope, and personal tastes, is really not a bad answer.
One of the key factors that a potential client must always weigh in making decisions on expensive projects such as a kitchen remodel is “value”. Dollars are important, there is no question about that. We are all careful with our dollars when we are considering big ticket spending. However, our dollars are only part of the overall equation when considering a kitchen remodel.
Factors such as customer service, a well-established company, past performance, dependability, previous customer experience with the company, and integrity, are all key elements that are usually not shown as a line item on a proposal. Nor is it easy to put a price tag on the value of these qualities and character traits in the company you are about to engage with. How much is your peace of mind really worth?
We meet with people all the time who focus only on how many dollars they will spend on their project, without regard for the “Value added factors” that seem to always come up missing when the only consideration is the amount of dollars and cents they will spend. We encourage you to carefully consider all the factors of a remodel project, including the hidden values which are so hard to see in the beginning, when selecting your remodel contractor. The hidden values do not usually remain hidden for long when the only consideration is dollars you will spend on your project.
