How to Refurbish the Kitchen–Top to Bottom

They do say that change is as good as a rest, and this iteration of the Roarin’ Twenties has many of us needing either. Whether you spent too much time in 2020 trying to master that darned sourdough recipe, or if closure of restaurants has left your kitchen feeling more like a prison than the heart of your home, it may be time to give that room a new burst of life. You may not be looking for an extensive remodel, but updating one element may be a striking way to refurbish the kitchen.

Cabinets

Your cabinets serve as the backbone of what goes on in the kitchen. Adequate storage produces efficiency and reduces stress when working in that hub, and quality cabinetry is sure to elevate the room. If you are feeling tight on space, you may consider replacing insufficient cabinets with a more functional solution. If, however, your cabinets work for you and just need an update, perhaps it is just a matter of repainting the cabinets you have or resurfacing them. Adding glass fronting to cabinets can turn sets of dishes into décor.

Walls

Sometimes all you need is a splash of color; sometimes too much color can make a room feel busy or cramped. If the paint or patterns on your kitchen walls are not serving the other fixed features (the cabinets, the counters, or the floors), consider a different shade or color palette as a relatively simple way to refurbish the kitchen.

Counters

It’s the place cookie dough is cut into Christmas trees and snowmen, where the chips and dip await eager fingers. Here calculus homework is mingled with crayon doodles and newly-arrived mail. When not arrayed with cutting boards and produce, it may sport pots and pans sunbathing as they dry. The counters are a central feature in your kitchen: they must be functional while serving as a statement. 

If you are looking to refurbish the kitchen, the countertops may be the place to start. Perhaps you need something sturdier than what you already have; granite or quartz are highly durable surfaces. Laminate may be the right fit if you are looking for a high-end look on a budget. If your goal is to soften or add elegance to the look of a room, marble countertops could fit the bill.

Floors

Are you tired of cleaning the grout in the tile, or is the laminate not holding up against the spills from the sink? The flooring in your kitchen experiences a lot of traffic: it is imperative that it works for you. While flooring is generally a pretty extensive feature to replace, the right floor can really tie a kitchen together. If your floor in a warm wood is not serving the cool grays and blues of your cabinets and walls, it may be the floor that needs to change.

Appliances

If your refrigerator or oven do not match the rest of the kitchen, it may be time to get an update. For a subtler shift in the overall design of the room, however, you might try switching up the smaller appliances. Consider a more modern-looking faucet or using a more minimalistic set of knobs on your cabinets. It might be time to add hanging lighting fixtures as statement pieces or to replace hanging lighting fixtures with something you don’t bump into every time you sit down for dinner.

Accents 

Accent walls or backsplashes can really give new life to a kitchen if everything else is working. Consider trying a pop of color on one or two walls or a swatch of tile behind the sink or stove. There are also patterned backsplashes for a bolder statement.

Furniture

Typically, the furniture in a kitchen is an element you can change that isn’t built into the walls or floor. Even something as simple as refurbishing the cushions on the bar stools can make a room feel fresh. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a bigger dining table to accommodate a growing family, or to downsize a table that needs only seat four, not eight. Consider giving bench seating a try, especially if storage space is low, or look into mounted seating at the central island.
